How To Measure A Firm Financial Perfomance Example
How To Measure A Firm Financial Perfomance Example How To Measure A Firm Financial Perfomance ââ¬â Article Example How to Measure a Firmââ¬â¢s Financial Performance There are a number of ways to measure a firmââ¬â¢s financial performance. While there are competing theories on the matter, most analysts agree that all elements must be considered in aggregation (Helft 2003). Within this context of understanding, the firmââ¬â¢s revenue from operations, operating income or cash flow, and net income are all important considerations (Helft 2003). There are a number of further measures that examine these figures in aggregation. One of the most prominent is referred to as return on equity (ROE). ROE measures accounting earning for a period per dollar of shareholdersââ¬â¢ equity invested. ROE is a popular determinant as it incorporates many important aspect of the companyââ¬â¢s balance sheet (Helft 2003). Still, ROE has been shown to have some shortcomings including the timing and risk problems that considers, respectively, the firmââ¬â¢s performance in relation to past quarters and poten tial risk investments (Helft 2003). The value problem is another challenge to ROE investment analysis (Helft 2003). Another prominent means of investigating financial performance is through profit margin. (Higgins 2000) Analysts can use profit margin to measure a firmââ¬â¢s supply chain management and pricing strategy. Another prominent strategy is asset turnover, as this gives insight into business practices. Financial leverage is another important measure of financial performance (Higgins 2000). Financial leverage measures a firmââ¬â¢s assets in relation to the shareholdersââ¬â¢ equity. While these financial measures are all important as measures of a firmââ¬â¢s financial performance, itââ¬â¢s necessary to consider these performance measures relative to other companies in the sector and in terms of macroeconomic market fluctuations. The Awakening Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Awakening - Essay Example Though she chooses to act on her own, she fails to understand that freedom without responsibility brings about anarchy. While defying the Victorian ideals of femininity, she gullibly defies her motherhood and wifehood by deserting her children and husband. Her husband Leonce Pontellier appears to be the ideal Victorian male who is devoted to his family and remains busy in his business. Though Leonce effectively represents the authoritarian and possessive Victorian patriarchy, he ââ¬âas a father and a husband- is less culpable. Before her romance with Robert, Ednaââ¬â¢s relationship with Leonce was quite healthy. It essentially testifies that apart from the authoritarian patriarchal essence Leonce appears to be a good husband. Before the awakening at Robertââ¬â¢s second escape, Edna appears to be one of those heroines, of feminist metanarrative, who are aggressive to their men accusing them as their restrictive superiors. Chopinââ¬â¢s heroine also grows hatred for her hus bandââ¬â¢s restrictions. She actively seeks a way out of it and begins to isolate her from the so-called male dominated society. She learns how to swim. Here swimming metaphorically refers to Ednaââ¬â¢s perception of freedom. In the vast expanse of the ocean Edna can realize her own strength. When she is in the water, she perceives her position as an individual entity amid the universe. Until the readers reach the end of the novel, they mistake Ednaââ¬â¢s husband Leonce Pontellier for a traditional patriarchal antagonist. Chopin presents the male characters as the passive patriarchal role-players of the society. Both Leonce and Robert cannot but succumb to the demands of the male dominated society. Neither Robert nor Leonce can be considered as villainous toward Edna. Rather the true villain, if there is any, is the society in which Robert and Leonce live. Chopin further explores deep into modern feminist metanarrative with a question how far it will be justifiable to conde mn motherhood and wifehood as the patriarchy-imposed restriction on womenââ¬â¢s freedom. Far from portraying men as villains she attempts to impeach the society in a broader context for mutilating womenââ¬â¢s freedom. Also she does not let a feminist go unquestioned. In the first place, she puts Ednaââ¬â¢s role into question whether her decision to leave her husband and family is justified or not. She longs for Robertââ¬â¢s love. But she is not considerate enough to think that someone else such as her husband and children need her love. If she needs absolute freedom, she has got it. But even then she commits suicide because she does not get Robertââ¬â¢s love. Thus Chopin attempts to show that loveless freedom is meaningless. In addition, Chopin wants to purport that Edna is in search of freedom. Necessarily she asks the readers what Ednaââ¬â¢s freedom is for. It is seems that Ednaââ¬â¢s freedom is to fulfill her carnal hunger. She is infatuated with Robertââ¬â ¢s charm. But she seems to be oblivious to the aftermaths of such extramarital affair. Very likely, Chopin wants to say that the society which Robert, Leonce and even Edna herself are committed to is one based on the universal rules of human relationship. Robertââ¬â¢s awareness of adultery and his Declination from their extramarital affair are more of his respect for the marital agreement between Edna and Leonce than of his fear of patriarchal authority. Again through Ednaââ¬â¢s attempt to attain freedom by distancing herself from

Operations Management Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Operations Management - Case Study Example Considering the initials sales for Britlon to be carried out in the year 2009, the expanding facilities need to be initiated soon. As the forecasts have shown slightly decreasing level of sales volume during the periods for 2006 to 2009, the full capacity of operation of the existing facilities are not required. Hence, reasonable levels of capacity estimation need to be undertaken for supporting the expected business volumes to be generated. This capacity forecasting is necessary because of the following reasons (Beasley, n.d.). The purchase of raw materials and their procurement process is to be analyzed properly to estimate the stock required to be maintained at each of the production locations. Thus the control on the inventory, planning the production process and its schedule all depends on the capacity that is available. This could also help the sales and logistics to plan their operations to ensure the support systems to meet the target volumes set from each plant. This could also help to give the feed back of possibility of future expansion or necessity in the reduction of the production for the overall operational efficiency. Capacity forecasting would also help the human resources department and financial department to ensure the allocations of resources at specific time to ensure smooth flow of operations. Also this would help to review the operations and help the top management to take strategic decisions that are vital for viable performance of the company. Based on these factors the, overall capacity at DSF is estimated as 40 million Kg of production capacity, which includes 30 million Kg of Britlon and 10 million Kg of Britlene. The production capacity for Britlene is planned to lower from the 5 fully working plants in 2006 to 3 fully working plants in 2009. With the information for the year 2006, the number of plants required would be five. But in 2008, at the existing rate of production, only four full capacity plants are needed. Thus the initial works of modification of facilities could be initiated during this time. One of the plants could stop the production and the necessary modification works could be started. This is expected to consume two years of time and by 2009 one fully operational plant for Britlon would be in place. Thus the expected sales of Britlon would be able to meet with this capacity. Thus in 2009, three plants for Britlene and one plant for Britlon would be in operation. Earlier to this, erection of two new facilities for the production of Britlon would be initiated at two different places attached to the existing sites. This project could be totally separate from the current production patterns. As it involved setting up of new facility, this might not hinder the operations at the above project locations too. This could be initiated in 2006 itself and hence by 2010, it would be possible for DSF to have three fully functional plants for production of Britlene and Britlon. Then the capacity available with DSF would be 15 million Kg of both Britlon and Britlene. Thus as per the forecast this capacity be enough to meet the expected volume of the sales. In 2009, one more Britlene plant could be modified to the have the capacity for the productio

The Main Advantages of Sales Force Automation Essay
The Main Advantages of Sales Force Automation - Essay Example Salesforce automation is a component of CRM that is implemented to execute, drive, and track sales initiatives. SFA systems organize sales teams by providing the tools to properly manage leads, accounts, opportunities, and marketing campaigns. (Sales Team Automation) Ã The contemporary age is the era of industrialization and technological advancement. The quick and accurate flow of information regulates the corporate companies within the business environment. All the great organizations are applying latest methods of communication and marketing while making and developing their strategies. Bill Gates, the Chairman of Microsoft Corporation, declares fast flow of information and application of technology to be in leading position. The most meaningful way to differentiate your company from your competitor, the best way to put distance between you and the crowd, is to do an outstanding job with information. How you gather, manage, and use information will determine whether you win or lose. (Gates: 1999 p 1). The managers of sales force apply sales marketing systems, i.e. the information management systems highly supportive in the mechanization of sales force administration; sales force automation is a part of it. Simply put the term refers to the s ystem that could maintain and keep the record of the complete sales process automatically. SFA includes a contact management system which tracks all contact that has been made with a given customer, the purpose of the contact, and any follow up that might be required.

Henry Briggs :: essays research papers
Henry Briggs Henry Briggs was born in Yorkshire, England and attended St. John's College in Cambridge. He graduated in 1581 and 1585 and became a lecturer of mathematics in 1592. In 1596 Briggs became the first professor of geometry at Gresham College in London. By 1615 he was completely engaged in the study, calculation, and teaching of logarithms. He met with Napier and proposed improvements to the logarithmic system developed by Napier. Briggs helped publish some of Napier's work and wrote Logarithmorum chilias prima in 1617. Briggs's major work was Arithmetica logarithmica in 1624. These tables of logarithms were useful tools for those performing large calculations. Briggs spent several years at Merton College in Oxford. He also composed a work on trigonometry (basically tables, both of the functions and of the logs of sines and tangents) that was left unfinished at his death.Thomas Smith, writing early in the 18th century, said that Briggs' parents were "humble of class and rather slender of means." Humble of class could mean too many things to guess, but I take the slender means to state unmistakably that they were poor. Smith indicates that Briggs could not have attended Cambridge without financial assistance from his college. Henry went to school in Cambridge, M.A. St. John's College, Cambridge, 1577-85; B.A., 1581; M.A., 1585. And he left quite a few mathematical manuscripts that remained unpublished. Briggs also devoted some attention to astronomy and saw logarithms initially primarily as a device to aid in astronomical calculations. He published Tables for the Improvement of Navigation, 1610, and North-west Passage to the South Sea, 1622. Briggs was consulted by the Virginia Company about the northwest passage, and from information about tides and currents he deduced the existence of such a passage.

Ethan from â⬠Realism Essay
The rise of Realism in 1855 was the time when farming began to industrialize, communication expanded through railroads, and Nationalism was yet again revived. On top of all these important transformations that have marked this period of time was the significance for literature with a new audience, new settings, and new characters. The novel, Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton, is a magnificent example of literature from the Realistic period. First, Realism is a definite movement away from the Romantic period. Romantics wrote regarding the unique and the unusual, whereas in Realism, literature was written about the average and ordinary. The town where the novel takes place is Starkfield, an average farming community. There is not much in the town that is of interest or anything extravagant to be known for. In addition, literature from Romanticism focused on hopes, while Realistic literature illustrated skepticism and doubt. The narrator describes the scene where Zeena declares to Ethan that her sickness is getting serious, saying, ââ¬Å"She continued to gaze at him through the twilight with a mien of wan authority, as of one consciously singled out for a great fate. Iââ¬â¢ve got complications,ââ¬â¢ she saidâ⬠(108 Wharton). Hope for Zeenaââ¬â¢s health is nonexistent, and she, being a hypochondriac, confirms the fact that she feels doubtful about life. The Romantics wrote about the unusual and hopeful, which are characteristics that are not strongly represented in Realistic literature. The second aspect of Realism is the idea of Regionalism. One indication of Regionalism in literature is the charactersââ¬â¢ dialect. An excellent depiction of dialect is where Harmon Gow says, ââ¬Å"Wust kind, . . . Moreââ¬â¢n enough to kill most menâ⬠(6). His regional accent is shown by the spelling and punctuation, allowing the reader to have an idea of how Harmon would have said it. Another aspect of Regionalism is the customs and the way of life of the characters. One way of life that the characters are accustomed to is the normality of marriage between cousins. As this practice is not enthusiastically accepted everywhere, it brings the Regionalistic aspect to the novel. Regionalism, which includes the characteristics of dialect and customs, is a critical component of Realism. Third, Realistic literature uses the concept of Naturalism. In Ethan Frome, the bleak winter setting is a primary clue that nature plays a key role in the story. Nature is displayed as a powerful and malevolent force that is indifferent to humankind. In the novel, the narrator once stated, ââ¬Å"But when winter shut down on Starkfield, and the village lay under a sheet of snow perpetually renewed from the pale skies, I began to see what life thereââ¬âor rather its negationââ¬âmust have been . . . â⬠(7). This statement depicts the winter seasons in Starkfield as gloomy and undesirable weather. Aside from the setting, the basic animal nature of humans also draws out the Naturalistic traits in Realism. The narrator tells what was going through Ethanââ¬â¢s mind following the smash-up, â⬠. . . and far off, up the hill, he heard the sorrel whinny, and thought: `I ought to be getting him his feed. . . ââ¬Ë â⬠(172). At such an intense moment, Ethanââ¬â¢s animal nature brings him to think about tending to his hungry horse instead of caring about his and Mattieââ¬â¢s teetering lives. These examples signify the sense of nature and its forces used in the literature of Realists. Edith Whartonââ¬â¢s novel, Ethan Frome, is a wonderful example of Realistic literature. Its style shows signs of a distinct shift away from Romanticism and illustrates the aspects of Regionalism and Naturalism, two major components of Realism. Authors of the Realistic period depicted life as typical, everyday people lived and knew it to be, using these important points. The ordinary characters that dealt with common problems and situations in the literature brought a new group of readers, establishing a unique new era that has changed the way people perceive life forever.
